Freida Pinto to star in film based on Thomas Hardy's novel | TRISHNA OFFICIAL TEASER TRAILER

'Slumdog Millionaire' star Freida Pinto is set to star in 'Trishna', a movie adaptation of Thomas Hardy's famous novel 'Tess of the d'Urbervilles'.

While the original novel was set in the British countryside but the adaptation will have an Indian backdrop.

Fresh from the strong opening of 'Rise of the Planet of the Apes', the 26-year-old actress is ready to head into leading lady status with this Michael Winterbottom-directed film, The Hollywood Reporter said.

The story follows the daughter of an auto rickshaw owner Trishna (Pinto), who finds her life destroyed by a combination of love and circumstances. She meets a businessman Jay who comes to town to work for his father's business.

'Trishna', co-starring British actor Riz Ahmed, marks Winterbottom's third adaptation of a Hardy novel. He previously directed 1996's 'Jude', based on 'Jude the Obscure', and 2000's 'The Claim', based on 'The Mayor of Casterbridge'.

Freida Pinto doesn't get Dev Patel's jokes

Well, her and Dev Patel's love story seems to be going on smoothly but as the saying goes 'nothing is perfect' and it's true in their case too. Well, Freida doesn't get Dev's jokes most of the times. When asked by Simi, Freida said, "Well, it's like we graduated together and with nobody else we could have that bond that we share. We have too many memories together and there jokes which only two of us know and giggle at and people don't even find it funny because it's our inside joke. Dev is extremely funny and has got an amazing sense of humour; sometimes it takes me like a minute to understand his jokes. He thinks I'm not laughing at his jokes but it's because I am processing his jokes in my head. Also, because he is English and his jokes are different from mine, so I it takes time for me to analyse, you know. I have more of an Indian sensibility. But now it's fine, we have kind of come to the same plane." We guess its time for Freida to brush up on British humour.
