Monsoon reaches Mumbai

Monsoon reaches Mumbai

"The southwest monsoon has further advanced into remaining parts of central Arabian Sea, Konkan and Goa, including Mumbai, some more parts of Central Maharashtra and interior Karnataka and some parts of Marathwada," the IMD weather report stated on Sunday.

As per the IMD, the monsoon usually arrives in Mumbai around June 10. Not since 2006, when it arrived on May 31, has it set in over Mumbai so early.

"The northern limit of the monsoon is over Dahanu, Nashik, Gulbarga, Anantpur and Nellore," the IMD daily weather report stated.

The report stated that the conditions are favourable for further progress of the monsoon into some parts of the north Arabian Sea, south Gujarat state, some more parts of central Maharashtra and Marathwada and the remaining parts of Karnataka during the next 48 hours and over some more parts of Bay of Bengal and some parts of north-eastern states during next two to three days.

The monsoon, which arrived in Pune on Saturday, continued to lash the city on Sunday. Heavy showers were recorded in the afternoon and evening city. Till 5.30 pm the city had recorded 25.6 mm rainfall.

The forecast states that rainfall is likely in the city over the next couple of days.

As per IMD officials, the weather systems in place include an "offshore trough at mean sea level from the Maharashtra coast to Kerala and a cyclonic circulation in the east central Arabian Sea, off the Maharashtra coast".
