Maruti today launched the new Swift at a starting price of Rs. 4.22 lakh to Rs 6.38 lakh (for the top-end diesel variant). The car is available in six variants – three petrol and three diesel.
Among the petrol variants, the base Maruti Swift LXi is priced at Rs. 4.22 lakh. The mid-range VXi is priced at Rs. 4.76 lakh and the top-end ZXi is priced at Rs. 5.53 lakh.
The diesel version of the Swift was earlier available in two variants only, but this time gets the addition of a top-end diesel ZDi. The base diesel version, the Swift LDi is priced at Rs. 5.17 lakh. The mid-range VDi is priced at Rs. 5.61 lakh. And the top-end ZDi is priced at Rs. 6.38 lakh. All prices are ex-showroom Delhi. Also read: First drive impressions of the new Maruti Swift.
Maruti has already got 50,000 bookings for the new Swift, and is in the process of expanding capacity. Nearly 80% of the bookings are for the diesel variants, furthering skewing the trend for diesel cars now.
Let’s evaluate some of the other details about the new Swift.
Refreshed engine
The petrol Swifts are powered by the 1.2-litre K-Series petrol engine that has now been given variable valve timing. The engine now puts out 86 bhp of power and 114 Nm of torque. The gear shift too has been worked upon, with the addition of a detent pin, making shifts much smoother. The petrol car, Maruti claims, is faster too, accelerating to 100 kmph in 12.6 seconds.
The diesel engine that powers the Swift is the same 1.3-litre Fiat-derived multi-jet diesel engine. This engine makes 74 bhp of power and 190 Nm of torque. It gets a new hydraulic engine mount which has improved NVH levels further. The better gearing and lighter weight has improved the diesel Swift too, which now has a claimed 0-100 kmph time of 14.8 seconds.
Better mileage
Mileage too has been improved, with the petrol Swift sporting an ARAI-certified mileage figure of 18.6 kmpl, while the diesel too has got an improved fuel-efficiency figure of 22.9 kmpl. The older Swift gave 17.9 kmpl and 21.7 kmpl for the petrol and diesel versions, respectively.
Improved equipment levels
The new Swifts have got slightly better equipment and a new look interior. Space is slightly improved for rear passengers, with about 28 mm more legroom. But boot space has gone down to 210 litres. The dashboard has been redesigned with inspiration from the Kizashi.
The instrument panel now sports a multi-information display that shows range, average fuel consumption, outside temperature and trip meters. The ZDi and ZXi variants also get an integrated audio system with six speakers and steering-mounted audio controls, alloy wheels, two airbags and climate control.
Summary
Overall, the new Swift is a much improved version of the original car. It retains all the elements that endeared it to buyers in the first place, such as being a great car to drive. And now Maruti has gone and improved the handling as well as the fuel efficiency and power output of the car.
The Swift was already the sales leader among premium hatchbacks in the country, and this car will now put more distance between it and its competition such as the Hyundai i20, Volkswagen Polo, Ford Figo and Toyota Liva.
The popularity of the car shows in the pre-launch bookings of over 38,000 cars. That’s going to take Maruti at least three months to service those orders, considering it presently has the capacity to roll out just 12,000 Swifts per month. By September, the capacity will be increased to 17,000 cars per month.
The Swift looks set to further consolidate its market position in the premium hatchback segment.
