VCU’s Jamie Skeen celebrates with fans after his team won the Southwest regional final game against Kansas, giving VCU their first-ever Final Four berth.
The 11th-seeded Rams beat Kansas 71-61 Sunday to become just the third 11th seed to ever make the Final Four. VCU will play in one of two semi-final contests Saturday in Houston. The finals are set for April 4.
Thousands of students with makeshift noisemakers jammed areas near the school’s Monroe Park campus in Richmond, the Times-Dispatch reported. Fans climbed atop vehicles and buildings to wave flags and signs.
“I want to congratulate Virginia Commonwealth University on their historic win against the Kansas University Jayhawks,” Gov. Bob McDonnell said in a statement. “Virginians are celebrating their victory all across the Commonwealth.”
McDonnell says VCU has a well-deserved reputation for academic and athletic excellence. It also has a state full of fans.
“We all look forward to cheering them on in the Final Four next weekend. I know they’ve got two more big wins left in them,” McDonnell said. “Shaka Smart and this group of talented student athletes are doing a tremendous job representing their school and community.
